Nickel finish was fairly common on model 19s, but if it looked good shape when you bought and is now flaking I`d consider it suspect. But there are some kinds of cleaning solvents that are hard on nickel finish.That is a very nice looking 586. I am guessing but I think you are correct on the manufacture date. I would think late 1980 or early 1981 maybe. Hopefully someone will chime in with a more precise date for you. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact.
