On a 427, 454 or thicker 396, it just BARELY fits - there's around 1/4" or less between the cylinders. On a run-of-the-mill 396, that gap is a lot closer to 1/2". If it's .030" over, its 4.390. .060 over is 4.420 .080 over is 4.440. Simple math.Going to 4.25" is a lot for a 396 block, and if the core had shifted during the casting process, there's a real concern that you'll have one or both banks of cylinders with thin walls on one side of the bore.
